Recruited from Williamstown Juniors, Charles "Chooka" Farrell was the subject of a recruiting tussle between Essendon and South Melbourne before eventually signing with the Same Olds. A brawny and dependable half-back flanker, Farrell was renowned for his clean ground play, strong overhead mark, and a reliable left-foot kick that saw him earn selection for Victoria in both 1921 and 1922. His time at Essendon was defined by a mix of personal heartbreak and triumph; after playing in the 1923 finals series, he narrowly missed selection for the Grand Final side that broke the club's premiership drought. He found redemption the following season, holding down a key defensive post in the 1924 Premiership team that claimed the flag under the league's unique round-robin finals system. After 69 games in red and black, Farrell departed the VFL to become captain-coach of Yarraville in the VFA.
