A talented rover from the Ballarat region, Charlie Fincher earned his shot at VFL level after impressing South Melbourne scouts during a representative match for Scarsdale. He managed nine senior appearances in the 1913 season, booting five goals and displaying plenty of potential before transferring to VFA club Essendon Town the following year. His promising career was tragically cut short by the First World War; after enlisting in 1914, he was killed in action during the initial Gallipoli landing on Anzac Day. Fincher’s football legacy survived through his younger brother Jack, who later forged a successful VFL career with Richmond and Footscray.
