Bio
A colossus of the pre-VFL era, Charlie "Tracker" Forbes arrived at Essendon from North Park Juniors in 1889 and established himself as the premier high-marking ruckman of the 1890s. Already a four-time VFA premiership player by the time the breakaway league formed in 1897, the 191cm follower was a terrifying physical presence for the era, using his wiry frame and immense reach to dominate aerial contests alongside rover Colin Campbell. He remained a pivotal figure in the club's inaugural VFL campaign, featuring in the 1897 premiership side that swept the round-robin finals series. Forbes is perhaps best remembered for his unintentional assist in the low-scoring decisive match against Melbourne that year; after taking a strong mark near goal in the final quarter, his shanked kick fell short into the arms of teammate Edgar Croft, who slotted the game's solitary goal to secure the flag.
