Bio
A foundation player who featured in Melbourne's inaugural VFL campaign, Charlie Goding carved out a versatile career that saw him excel at both ends of the ground. After sitting out the entire 1898 season, he crossed to South Melbourne, where he initially established himself as a key defender and held down centre half-back in the club's 1899 Grand Final side. Goding later reinvented himself as a potent forward, using his strong marking and accurate finishing to top South Melbourne's goalkicking table for three consecutive years between 1901 and 1903. His consistency was rewarded with state selection for Victoria in 1901, cementing his status as one of the Lake Oval's most reliable early contributors before he departed to finish his playing days in the VFA.
