Recruited from Kilcunda-Bass in the Gippsland region, Charlie Grummisch was a tall, left-footed utility who showed immense promise during Hawthorn's golden era of the early 1970s. Standing at 189cm, he possessed a strong overhead mark and was initially deployed as a defender before being swung forward to help cover the loss of legendary spearhead Peter Hudson during the 1972 season. Despite playing 12 games during the Hawks’ 1971 premiership campaign, he missed selection for the Grand Final side that defeated St Kilda, sitting on the fringe of one of the strongest teams in VFL history. Grummisch remained a valuable depth player capable of hitting the scoreboard—booting a career-high 24 goals in 1973—but he struggled to cement a permanent position in a lineup featuring the likes of Peter Knights and Leigh Matthews. His career was ultimately cut short by persistent injuries, forcing him into retirement at just 23 years of age.
