Bio
A mature-age recruit hailing from the Gippsland region, Illingworth was a defender whose path to the VFL involved a brief administrative skirmish. Although he originally signed with St Kilda while playing for Bairnsdale, he was eventually cleared to join Melbourne in May 1899, making his debut as a 28-year-old. He held down a spot in the backline for 14 matches, contributing to a campaign where the club won seven of its first eight games before a significant mid-year collapse. His stint in the big league was fleeting, however, as he returned to the country to rejoin Bairnsdale late in the same season, leaving his VFL tally at a modest single-year cameo.
