Bio
A classic example of the scholar-footballer common in Melbourne's early years, Charlie MacKay was recruited from Trinity College while completing his medical studies at the University of Melbourne. Operating as a handy forward who knew where the goals were, he booted seven majors in his dozen appearances, juggling the physical toll of VFL football with the demands of his exams. His time at the top level was brief and dictated by his professional priorities; after graduating in late 1905, he managed just three more games the following season before his hospital residency forced his retirement. MacKay’s legacy extends far beyond the boundary line, as he went on to serve with distinction as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps during World War I and later became a pioneering administrator as the director of the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria.
