Bio
Recruited from VFA powerhouse Port Melbourne, Charlie "Laddie" Pettiona arrived at the Lake Oval in 1936 with a strong family connection to the club, being the nephew of former Bloods wingman Cecil Pettiona. He broke into the senior side during his debut season and was famously selected as the 19th man for the 1936 Grand Final, where he took the field in South Melbourne's heartbreaking loss to Collingwood. Unable to cement a permanent spot in the starting eighteen, he added just a handful of games to his tally in 1937 before eventually clearing to Sandringham. His life was tragically cut short after his VFL career ended, as he was killed in a traffic accident involving a military truck in South Melbourne in 1946, aged just 33.
