Bio
Born in Corowa, New South Wales, Charlie "Tyke" Roland cut his teeth in the Ovens and Murray Football League with Border United and Excelsior before arriving at Princes Park. Making his debut in the opening round of 1900, he quickly established himself as a consistent and reliable wingman for the Blues. His form during this period was highly regarded, earning him selection for Victoria on six occasions, including a clash against South Australia at the Adelaide Oval in 1902.
Roland’s career is defined by a case of unfortunate timing regarding team success. After being a mainstay of the Carlton side during its building phase, he departed the club after 1905 to head west, playing for Boulder City in the Goldfields Football League. While he tasted premiership success in Western Australia, his absence meant he missed Carlton's back-to-back flags in 1906 and 1907. He returned to the Blues midway through 1908 and managed four final appearances to bring his career tally to exactly 100 games, but was unable to break into the side for the finals campaign, narrowly missing out on the club's historic third consecutive premiership. He finished that season with Essendon in the VFA.
