Bio
Originally from the Goulburn Valley, Charlie Stewart was an Indigenous wingman who experienced a remarkable but fleeting VFL career. After playing with Nathalia and Lemnos, he arrived at the Western Oval via the Essendon reserves and immediately cemented his place in a strong Footscray lineup. Stewart played 20 games in his debut season, playing a key role in the Bulldogs' surge to the 1961 Grand Final, where he was selected as a reserve for the loss to Hawthorn. Despite establishing himself as a regular in a runner-up side, his time at the top level ended abruptly when he was released early the following year. He returned to country football as a celebrated playing coach for Kyabram and Stanhope, and is recognised today as one of the Western Bulldogs' pioneering Indigenous players.
