Bio
Recruited from Port Melbourne Juniors, Charlie Wells was a versatile half-back flanker who briefly represented Richmond before etching his name into history at Fitzroy. After a solitary season with the Tigers in 1912, he crossed to the Maroons the following year and immediately cemented a spot in their starting lineup. His decision to move proved inspired, as he played a key defensive role in Fitzroy's 1913 premiership victory over St Kilda in just his first season at the club. While his VFL career was short-lived—spanning just three seasons before he transferred to VFA club Northcote in 1915—Wells remained a premiership player for the rest of his life. His connection to the league continued through the next generation, with his son Billy Wells playing senior football for Richmond in the 1930s.
