A decorated South Australian ruckman, Charlie Whitehead arrived at St Kilda with a formidable résumé, having already captained Sturt and played a key role in their 1926 premiership side alongside his brother Reg. A regular state representative who featured in both the 1927 and 1930 Carnivals, he was 33 years old when he crossed into the VFL for the 1932 season. Whitehead showed immediate utility as a goal-kicking follower, booting nine goals in his nine appearances, but his time at the Junction Oval ended in controversy. Unwilling to accept a demotion to the reserves late in the season, he abruptly resigned and returned to the SANFL, where he finished his career back at Unley.
