Stats
Bio
Recruited from North Carlton, Charlie Young was a notably diminutive footballer who made a brief appearance at VFL level for Fitzroy in the late 1930s. Standing at just 163cm and weighing 61kg, he was one of the smallest players in the league when he broke into the Maroons' senior lineup late in the 1937 season. He played his two games as a rover, debuting in Round 16 against St Kilda, but was unable to secure a long-term place in the side and departed the Brunswick Street Oval without registering a goal. While his on-field career was fleeting, his life after football included service in the Second AIF during World War II before ending in tragedy, as he was killed in a massive explosion aboard the seismic survey ship Western Spruce at Port Welshpool in 1969.
