Bio
Hailing from Golden Point in the Ballarat league, Samuel "Chip" Turner’s arrival at the Lakeside Oval was significantly delayed by the Great War, forcing South Melbourne to wait three years for his services after initially seeking his clearance in 1915. When he finally debuted in 1918, he wasted no time cementing himself as a key cog in the defensive unit. A disciplined backman capable of locking down dangerous opposition forwards, Turner etched his name into club folklore during his debut season's Grand Final against Collingwood. Handed the unenviable task of manning Magpie champion Dick Lee, Turner restricted the goal-kicking machine to just three majors, playing a pivotal role in securing the blood-stained angels' second premiership. He remained a reliable fixture in the backline for five seasons before hanging up the boots in 1922.
