Selected with pick 28 in the 2006 National Draft, Chris Dawes established himself as a structural key forward capable of taking strong contested marks and crashing packs. While often playing a supporting role to Travis Cloke in Collingwood's forward line, his work rate and physical presence were integral to the club's success under Mick Malthouse. His career highlight came in 2010, where he played a pivotal role in the premiership side, notably booting two goals in the Grand Final Replay against St Kilda. However, as the Magpies looked to reshuffle their forward setup following the 2012 season, Dawes sought a fresh start elsewhere to secure a primary position in attack.

He requested a trade to Melbourne, joining the Demons during a difficult rebuilding phase where experienced bodies were in short supply. Brought in to provide a focal point inside 50 and mentor a developing list, he was immediately added to the club's leadership group. While he provided a contest and drew defenders away from younger teammates, his four seasons in red and blue were frequently hampered by persistent injuries and inconsistent form. Dawes was eventually delisted at the end of 2016, retiring as a premiership player who served as a rugged, contesting target throughout his 121-game career.
