A distinct football journeyman, Gomez began his senior career with Gormanston in Tasmania's mining leagues before returning to Victoria to join the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. His form in the midweek industrial competition—where he played alongside future teammates—saw him recruited by North Melbourne during their VFA era, eventually earning him a place as an "Original Shinboner" in the club's inaugural VFL side in 1925. Operating primarily as a half-back flanker, he made an immediate impact by being named among the best afield in North's historic debut match against Geelong. He crossed to Essendon the following season, where he managed to break into a strong lineup to feature in the 1926 finals series before concluding his League career as a depth player.
