Bio
Recruited from Paddington, Chris Laird was a dangerous forward pocket who etched his name into South Melbourne folklore with his clutch performances during the 1918 finals campaign. While his twin brother Frank also later represented the club, Chris established an enduring legacy by booting three goals in the final five minutes of the 1918 semi-final to sink Carlton, before sealing the premiership a fortnight later with a match-winning goal soccered off the ground in the dying seconds against Collingwood. A potent scorer who averaged nearly two goals a game, Laird remained a consistent avenue to the big sticks for five seasons, retiring with a formidable strike rate and the immortal status of a premiership hero.
