Recruited from East Fremantle, Chris Mainwaring was a foundational member of the West Coast Eagles' inaugural squad in 1987 and quickly became the face of the club's rise to power. Operating primarily as a wingman, Mainwaring was instantly recognisable for his flowing blonde hair and became renowned for an elite aerobic capacity that allowed him to run opponents into the ground. While he was not the most technically gifted kick in the side, his relentless work ethic and ability to link play made him a vital engine room component during the Eagles' dominant era under Mick Malthouse.

Mainwaring's career coincided with the club's greatest successes, playing a pivotal role in the historic 1992 and 1994 premiership victories. His standing in the game was recognised with All-Australian selection in 1991 and 1996, and he etched his name into the record books as the first West Coast player to reach the 200-game milestone. Despite battling injuries late in his tenure, he remained a beloved figure among the supporter base until his retirement in 1999, remembered as a hard-running icon who helped establish the Eagles as a national powerhouse.
