Bio
Selected by Richmond with pick 55 in the 2000 National Draft, Chris Newman evolved from a Dandenong Stingrays junior into one of the Tigers' most dependable servants. A composed defender with an elite left-foot kick, he was often tasked with distributing the ball from the back half, using his precision to launch counter-attacks while showing immense courage in aerial contests. For much of his career, he provided stability in a team that often languished near the bottom of the ladder, earning a reputation for his professional standards and unwavering on-field consistency.
Newman was appointed club captain in 2009, leading the side during the difficult transition period between coaches Terry Wallace and Damien Hardwick. Although his four-year tenure as skipper did not yield finals appearances, his selfless leadership was credited with helping to rebuild the club's culture, paving the way for future success. He eventually broke through for his first final in 2013 after waiting longer than any other player in VFL/AFL history to taste major round action, ending his career in 2015 as a Life Member and a highly respected figure at Punt Road.
