Recruited from Wycheproof-Narraport in country Victoria, Chris Pym served a patient apprenticeship at Punt Road, spending four seasons in the lower grades—including a role in the Under-19s' 1985 premiership—before finally breaking into the senior side in 1988. A skilful, dual-sided wingman and flanker, Pym is best remembered for a standout performance in Round 15 of his debut season, where he booted three goals in a famous Friday night upset over reigning premiers Carlton at the MCG. Despite establishing himself as a regular contributor in his first two years, his progress was cruelly halted by a serious leg injury that sidelined him for the entire 1990 season. Unable to regain his place on the senior list, he eventually moved to the VFA to play for Frankston.
