Bio
Recruited from Berrigan in the Riverina, Clarrie Lonsdale became a defensive anchor for Hawthorn during the club's difficult formative years in the VFL. Making his debut in 1927, just two seasons after the club's admission to the league, Lonsdale established himself as a fullback capable of withstanding the immense pressure placed on the Mayblooms' backline. With the team frequently struggling at the foot of the ladder, he was often the busiest man on the ground, relying on a powerful long kick and strong marking ability to repel constant opposition attacks.
Despite the lack of team success, Lonsdale's individual consistency was standout. He was crowned the club's Best and Fairest in 1931 and became one of Hawthorn's earliest players to reach the 100-game milestone. He served as a pillar of stability through a bleak decade for the club, providing reliable service in the last line of defence until his final season in 1937.
