Teams

A powerful ruckman from the Riddell District Football League, Clarrie O'Connor arrived at South Melbourne as a mature-age recruit with a decorated country résumé. Having already won a league Best and Fairest with Hesket and a premiership with Woodend, the 29-year-old was finally given his chance at VFL level in 1939. He debuted in Round 3 and held his spot for five consecutive matches, using his impressive 186cm and 92kg frame to compete in the follower division. His time at the Lake Oval proved to be a brief cameo, however, as he obtained a clearance back to Woodend immediately after this short block of games, cementing his legacy as a bush champion who made a fleeting but credited appearance at the highest level.
