Bio
A defender recruited from VFA club Camberwell after developing with local junior side Riversides, Clarrie Shields commenced his VFL career with Footscray in 1935. He spent three seasons at the Western Oval but struggled to command a regular senior spot, prompting a move to Collingwood where he faced similar difficulties breaking into the Magpies' strong lineup. While his senior opportunities at Victoria Park were limited to just seven games, Shields became a key contributor in the seconds and played in the club's 1940 reserves premiership side. He found a third home at St Kilda in 1941, providing experienced defensive cover for the Saints during the war years before concluding his journeyman career in 1943.
