Recruited from the Preston Juniors, Claude Stanlake arrived at St Kilda during a lean era for the club, earning his senior debut against Collingwood at Victoria Park in late 1902. Standing just 173cm, he featured primarily as a small utility, managing 18 appearances and four goals across two difficult seasons where the Saints often languished at the bottom of the ladder. While his VFL career was brief, Stanlake found a second wind as a footballer after relocating to the Northern Territory in 1915 for employment. Far removed from the Melbourne leagues, he became a standout player in the foundation years of the NTFL, establishing himself as a key figure in the Top End's competition long after his time at the Junction Oval had concluded.
