Bio
A flamboyant character and Gallipoli veteran who entertained troops as a singer during the First World War, South Australian Claude Toovey arrived at Fitzroy as a seasoned 30-year-old rather than a traditional recruit. He had already carved out a significant legacy in the SANFL with Norwood, where he starred as a dashing wingman renowned for his strong marking and elite stab passing, culminating in a Best and Fairest award during the club's 1922 premiership campaign. Following stints captain-coaching in country Victoria at Ballarat and Birchip, Toovey joined the Maroons for a single season in 1927, playing 15 games in the midfield before returning to the bush to coach Nhill. Though his time in the VFL was brief, he remains a celebrated figure in South Australian football history for his instrumental role in breaking Norwood's long premiership drought.
