Bio
Recruited from the Gippsland Power with pick 17 in the 2011 National Draft, Clay Smith established himself as a ferocious competitor whose career was defined by exceptional resilience in the face of significant injury setbacks. A hard-at-it midfielder and high-pressure forward, Smith possessed a natural aggression and hunger for the contest that endeared him to the Western Bulldogs faithful, although his continuity was severely hampered by three separate anterior cruciate ligament ruptures. Despite these interruptions, he produced a career-best patch of form during the club's historic 2016 finals campaign, most notably booting four first-half goals in the Preliminary Final victory over Greater Western Sydney before playing a key role in the premiership side the following week. Unable to overcome his chronic knee issues, Smith retired in 2018, remembered as a selfless teammate who overcame immense physical adversity to contribute to the club's greatest success.
