Bio
Recruited from Kyneton in the Bendigo Football League, Cliff Deacon arrived at South Melbourne with a strong reputation after claiming the 1958 Michelsen Medal. His path to the VFL was contentious; despite significant interest from Hawthorn, the Swans enforced a strict residential claim on the big man, blocking a move to Glenferrie Oval based on his time living in their zone while playing for Williamstown thirds. Standing 189cm, Deacon was a robust ruckman who established himself in the senior side, enjoying his most consistent campaign in 1961 where he became a regular fixture in the starting lineup. However, his promising career was effectively derailed by a severe knee injury that required surgery, limiting him to just two final appearances before he was forced into premature retirement.
