Bio
Cliff Riley was an Ararat native whose path to League football was unconventional, heavily delayed by his service in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. Consequently, he did not play his first competitive match until age 21 in Mildura, eventually moving to Melbourne and refining his craft with the VAFA powerhouse University Blacks. St Kilda recruited the mature-age amateur in 1951, where he operated as a versatile small man capable of rotating between the back pocket and roving duties. He held his spot for the majority of the 1952 season—featuring in the club's notable country fixture against Footscray at Yallourn—before retiring from the VFL after just 16 games to focus on his professional studies and a career with the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission.
