Recruited from the State Savings Bank amateur team, Dick Chandler was a clever forward who made an immediate impact upon his arrival at Hawthorn in 1931. He showed early promise as a resourceful attacker, booting five goals in his first two games for the Mayblooms. Despite this sharp start, Chandler vanished from the VFL scene for nearly a decade, spending nine seasons away from the league's top flight. He made a surprise return with Carlton in 1940, where he played a solitary senior match and kicked a goal, ensuring he hit the scoreboard in both of his brief VFL stints before retiring with a remarkable strike rate of two goals per game.
