Bio
Known affectionately as "Pixie," Clive Coles was a versatile local recruit who served Geelong faithfully through the 1930s before finding his true calling in the forward line. Standing at 177cm, he spent the bulk of his early career plugging gaps in the back pocket or roving, establishing himself as a reliable if unheralded utility. However, a strategic positional switch in 1937 transformed his output; he became a dangerous avenue to goal, capping off his breakout year with a pivotal four-goal haul in the Grand Final victory over Collingwood, cementing his place in Cats history.
Coming off a career-best 36 goals in 1938, Coles made a move to St Kilda for the 1939 season. He showed flashes of his forward craft at the Junction Oval, most notably bagging six goals against Fitzroy in just his second game for the Saints. Despite the promising start, his stint at St Kilda was brief, and he departed the VFL at the end of the year to join Port Melbourne, leaving behind a legacy defined by that one golden afternoon at the MCG in '37.
