Bio
A strongly built running defender recruited from Heidelberg, Clyde Smith’s brief tenure at Victoria Park was defined by an unusual mid-season sabbatical. After debuting in late 1921, Smith played the opening rounds of the 1922 season before abruptly heading bush to play alongside Bill Twomey at Stawell. He famously returned to Collingwood later that same year to answer an emergency SOS, swooping back to help a Magpies defence decimated by illness and injury. Noted for his pace and reliable marking across half-back, he left the VFL permanently at season's end to coach in country Victoria. His post-football life ended in tragedy when, serving as a police constable, he was accidentally shot and killed by a colleague in 1935.
