Bio
A talented all-round sportsman who rowed for Tasmania in the King's Cup, Deane was recruited by Melbourne after impressing for the Apple Isle at the 1924 interstate carnival. He quickly established himself as a vigorous rover and beautiful kick, playing a pivotal role in the Demons' 1926 premiership triumph and earning Victorian state selection. After a season in New Zealand for work, he returned to coach the Melbourne reserves to a flag in 1932, a success that saw St Kilda secure him as captain-coach for the following season. Deane's on-field stint at the Saints was brief, as he retired after just three games to focus exclusively on coaching from the sidelines.
