Bio
Arriving at Arden Street from Kensington and Coburg Amateurs, Col Thornton was a formidable ruckman who etched his name into North Melbourne history as a member of the club's inaugural Grand Final side. Standing at 193cm, he offered a strong presence as a follower and enjoyed a breakout season in 1950, shouldering the ruck duties in the premiership decider against Essendon. He backed this up by playing every game in 1951, but his fortunes turned shortly after as he struggled to retain his spot in the senior lineup, spending the majority of the 1952 and 1953 campaigns in the reserves. Seeking a fresh start, Thornton crossed to St Kilda for the 1954 season to play under former teammate Les Foote, but he could only manage a handful of appearances for the Saints before his VFL career concluded.
