Bio
Hailing from Sale, Colin Boyd initially broke into the VFL with Footscray in 1973, but it was a successful detour through the VFA that truly defined his career. After a short stint with the Bulldogs, Boyd moved to Williamstown, where he flourished as a defender, winning a premiership and the 1976 Field Medal as the best and fairest in Division 2. Essendon offered him a lifeline in 1977, and he repaid the faith immediately with a stellar return season, polling 16 Brownlow votes to finish second at the club behind only Simon Madden. A determined half-back flanker known for his consistency and ability to read the play, Boyd capped his time at Windy Hill by winning the Gardiner Medal in the reserves before departing to captain-coach Leongatha.
