Honours

Recruited from North Hobart with pick 46 in the 2006 National Draft, Colin Garland established himself as a reliable servant for Melbourne during a tumultuous period in the club's history. Although he arrived at the Demons as a forward prospect capable of pushing up the ground, Garland found his true calling in the backline following a breakout season in 2008 that earned him a Rising Star nomination. As a defender, he possessed a deceptively versatile skillset, capable of manning key position forwards despite his lighter frame while remaining agile enough to contain smaller opponents. His ability to read the flight of the ball and intercept marked him as one of the Demons' most consistent performers during an era where the backline was frequently under siege.

Garland's career-best form came in 2013, where his defensive efforts in a struggling side were recognised with a runner-up finish in the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal behind Nathan Jones. However, the latter stages of his career were frustrated by injury, and the arrival of new defensive talent eventually squeezed him out of the senior lineup. After spending his final season providing leadership in the VFL, he retired in 2017 as a respected one-club player. Following his playing days, Garland transitioned immediately into a coaching role with Melbourne's VFL affiliate, the Casey Demons, continuing his long association with the club.
