A local product recruited from neighbouring Brunswick, Colin Holt served a long apprenticeship in the Carlton Thirds and Reserves—winning premierships in the lower grades—before finally earning his senior call-up in 1955. His VFL debut remains one of the most infamous in league history; the 21-year-old half-forward was reported for kicking Footscray legend Charlie Sutton and subsequently suspended for eight weeks, a massive blow to his early momentum. While he was a steady contributor who could play in defence, through the centre, or up forward, Holt struggled to cement a permanent spot at Princes Park following the tribunal setback. He crossed to Richmond in 1958 for a fresh start, adding 21 games to his tally as a versatile utility over two seasons, before finishing his playing days in the VFA with Coburg.
