Stats
Bio
Con McCarthy established himself as a premier ruckman and leader during a decorated stint with Collingwood that began in 1915. A powerful follower known for his inspiring presence, he played a crucial role in the Magpies' 1917 premiership before elevating his standing further by captaining the club to the 1919 flag. After 101 games and two seasons as skipper at Victoria Park, McCarthy departed the League to become a transformational figure for Footscray in the VFA.
As captain-coach of the Tricolours, McCarthy orchestrated a golden era that included back-to-back VFA premierships in 1923 and 1924, culminating in the famous Championship of Victoria victory over League premiers Essendon. When Footscray was admitted to the VFL in 1925, he naturally led the club into the competition as its inaugural captain-coach. He provided hardened experience to the new entrants for two seasons before retiring, leaving a legacy as a premiership captain across two different competitions.
