Bio
A stocky utility recruited from Oakleigh, Cory Young initially cut his teeth at Punt Road, where he was a member of Richmond’s 1989 Under-19s premiership side but found senior opportunities scarce during a turbulent era for the Tigers. Handed a lifeline by West Coast in the 1991 Pre-Season Draft, his brief stint in Perth became the stuff of cult folklore; he played a solitary game for the Eagles—a famous victory over Essendon at Windy Hill where he contributed a goal. However, his AFL career abruptly stalled after he reportedly questioned coach Mick Malthouse’s feedback during the post-match review, a move that allegedly ensured he was never selected at the top level again. Young eventually returned to Victoria and carved out a distinguished legacy in the VFA, captaining Oakleigh and winning the prestigious J.J. Liston Trophy in 1994.
