Bio
The younger brother of Richmond legend Neil Balme, Craig Balme was a rugged defender who carved out a significant legacy in the SANFL after a brief stint at Punt Road. Recruited from Ivanhoe Grammar, he progressed through the Tigers' grades to win an under-19s premiership but struggled to crack the senior side, managing just three games in 1983 before crossing to South Australia to play under his brother's coaching at Norwood. He immediately established himself as an uncompromising full-back with a long kick and a physical edge, famously setting the tone for the Redlegs' 1984 premiership by clashing with Port Adelaide star Tim Evans during the pre-match national anthem. While his VFL career was short-lived, Balme became a bona fide great in the SANFL, playing over 250 games and earning life membership at Norwood.
