Recruited from Eastlake in the ACT, Craig Bolton began his AFL journey with the Brisbane Lions during the dawn of their golden era. Despite his obvious talent, he struggled to cement a permanent spot in a star-studded lineup, managing just 29 games in three seasons and watching the 2001 and 2002 Grand Final triumphs from the sidelines as an emergency. Seeking regular senior football, he transferred to the Sydney Swans prior to the 2003 season, a move that immediately revitalised his career and established him as one of the competition's premier defenders.

Bolton quickly evolved into a linchpin of the Swans' renowned defensive unit, admired for his exceptional closing speed and disciplined one-on-one checking. Capable of matching up on both tall and small forwards, his consistency was rewarded with All-Australian selection in 2006 and 2009 and a vital role in the club's historic 2005 premiership victory. Elevating his standing within the club further, he served as co-captain from 2008 to 2010, leading by example until a persistent Achilles injury forced his retirement early in the 2011 season.
