Arriving at Princes Park as a marquee recruit from Port Adelaide, Craig Bradley had already established himself as a premier athlete in the SANFL and as a first-class cricketer for South Australia and Victoria. His transition to the VFL in 1986 was part of a significant recruiting drive that saw him join fellow South Australians Stephen Kernahan and Peter Motley in navy blue, a move that instantly revitalised Carlton’s list. Unlike a developing draftee, Bradley entered the league as a mature, ready-made star, allowing him to impact the competition immediately and play a pivotal role in the club's premiership success the following year.

Renowned for his distinct running style and exceptional aerobic capacity, Bradley dominated the wing and midfield for seventeen seasons. His game was built on relentless gut-running, allowing him to accumulate massive possession counts by simply outworking his opponents from the first bounce to the final siren. While possessed of silky skills and the ability to kick effectively on both sides of the body, it was his durability that defined him; he rarely missed matches through injury and maintained an elite standard of performance well past the age when most midfielders retire.
