Bio
Recruited from the Western Jets with the third overall pick in the 1993 National Draft, Craig Ellis established himself as a reliable, tight-checking defender for the Western Bulldogs. While he rarely troubled the scorers, Ellis became a fixture in the Bulldogs' backline during the Terry Wallace era, often tasked with nullifying dangerous opposition small forwards and midfielders. His disciplined approach helped shore up the defence during the club's run to consecutive Preliminary Finals in 1997 and 1998, and he remained a consistent contributor at the Kennel for eight seasons.
Following the 2001 season, Ellis was traded to Melbourne in exchange for a third-round draft pick as the Bulldogs looked to regenerate their list. He brought valuable experience to the Demons' back half, playing 13 games in his debut season for the club, including a finals appearance against Adelaide. Ellis added depth to the Melbourne squad for two years before departing the AFL landscape at the conclusion of the 2003 season, finishing his career as a serviceable 100-game player known for his defensive accountability.
