Teams

Recruited from Banyule, Craig McGrath was a home-grown product of the Fitzroy system who captained the club’s Under-19s premiership team in 1982 before making his senior mark. A powerfully built key forward who could also pinch-hit in the ruck, he became a regular fixture during the Lions’ resurgence in the mid-1980s, playing a significant role in their memorable 1986 finals campaign. However, McGrath became an unfortunate casualty of Fitzroy’s salary cap squeeze at the end of 1989 and was delisted, only to be thrown a lifeline by West Coast with the fourth pick in the 1990 pre-season draft. He proved useful for the Eagles as a structural target, featuring in the famous drawn Qualifying Final against Collingwood and its subsequent replay, but struggled to hold his spot the following year and finished his career in the WAFL with East Perth and Perth.
