Bio
Recruited from SANFL club Woodville after a protracted clearance dispute, Craig McKellar arrived at Richmond in 1971 and quickly established himself as one of the VFL’s premier "knock" ruckmen. Standing 196cm, he was renowned for his tremendous leap and ability to punch the ball long distances to the advantage of the Tigers' smaller midfielders. His athleticism and tap work made him a central figure in Tom Hafey's powerhouse sides of the early 1970s. He played a crucial role in the 1973 premiership victory over Carlton and was a standout individual performer during this era, leading the club's Brownlow Medal polling in both 1972 and 1975.
Despite his strong home-and-away form, McKellar's time at Punt Road ended in controversy when he was omitted from the senior side during the 1975 finals series. Stung by the decision, he initially announced a shock retirement at just 25 years of age before being lured back to the field by Melbourne. After another messy transfer saga involving blocked clearances and rival bids, he eventually joined the Demons for the 1976 season. He spent three years in red and blue, adding 39 games to his tally, before retiring permanently at the end of 1978.
