Bio
Recruited from Lalbert in the Mallee region, Craig Smith was a classy utility whose promising career at Punt Road was largely defined by a battle against persistent injuries. After a premiership campaign with the Under 19s, he made an immediate impact at senior level in 1986, using his refined foot skills on the half-back flank and wing to finish runner-up in the Jack Dyer Medal in just his debut season. Despite this rapid ascent, he struggled to stay on the park, missing the entire 1988 season and requesting a transfer to the country leagues in 1990 due to frustration with his lack of continuity. Although the Tigers coaxed him back for a serviceable return to the senior side in 1991, recurring fitness issues and illness ultimately limited him to 72 games over eight seasons before he finished his AFL tenure in 1993.
