Bio
Recruited from amateur side Collegians, Cyril Gove was a featherweight wingman who competed at just 55kg. Although a capable player who earned state selection for Victoria, his legacy is defined by a unique sporting double achieved during the 1915 season. On a Saturday in May, Gove rode a horse named Menthe to third place at Moonee Valley in the early afternoon before hurriedly travelling to the East Melbourne Cricket Ground to take his place in the Essendon side, where he was named one of the team's best against South Melbourne. His time at the top level was interrupted when the club withdrew from the league during the First World War, and after a brief return in 1918, he moved to the New South Wales Riverina to captain-coach Mathoura.
