Bio
Born into a family of exceptional pedigree, Cyril Mann was the grandson of prominent Yorta Yorta activist William Cooper and nephew of Stawell Gift winner Lynch Cooper. Recruited to Carlton from Silvan in the Yarra Valley, he immediately impressed as a high-flying full-forward capable of spectacular aerial feats, booting 65 goals in his 42 games. However, his VFL career was heavily curtailed by World War II, during which he served with the 2/23rd Battalion in Tobruk. Upon his discharge, Mann returned to Princes Park for the start of the 1945 season but managed only three appearances before surprisingly transferring to the VFA mid-year, effectively missing out on the Blues' infamous "Bloodbath" premiership campaign. He subsequently forged a brilliant second career at Port Melbourne, reinventing himself as a dashing centre half-back and starring in the Borough's 1947 premiership side.
