Bio
Recruited from Mentone, Cyril O'Brien was a rugged utility capable of playing as a follower or in defence. He was the brother of Leo O'Brien, a notable sportsman who represented Australia in Test cricket and also played for the Tigers. Cyril served a lengthy apprenticeship in the seconds before breaking into the senior side in 1936, though he found it difficult to secure a starting position and was named as the 19th man in seven of his nine career appearances. He departed Punt Road the following season to captain-coach the Dunlop team in the industrial league before serving as a Staff Sergeant in World War II, where he contracted an illness that affected his health long after his return to civilian life.
