Teams

A dual-code sporting talent from Tasmania, Anderson arrived at Melbourne with a reputation as a prolific goal-kicker, famously booting 22 goals in a single NWFU match for Cooee before his recruitment. He balanced his football with duties as a fast bowler for the Tasmanian state cricket team, eventually playing six first-class matches. Anderson showed immediate promise at VFL level as a key forward, snagging 14 goals in his debut season—including a rich vein of form late in 1953—but found opportunities scarce in Norm Smith's emerging dynasty side. After managing just the opening round of 1954, he requested a clearance to the VFA, where he immediately tasted success as the full-forward in Williamstown's 1954 premiership team.
