Bio
Recruited from Woori Yallock, Damian Monkhorst arrived at Collingwood as a raw, imposing figure who quickly became a cult hero at Victoria Park. A physically intimidating ruckman who used his substantial frame to protect his midfielders and enforce the contest, "Monkey" was deceptive in his athleticism, possessing an endurance tank that allowed him to grind down lighter opponents over four quarters. He was a pivotal member of the drought-breaking 1990 premiership side, forming a rugged ruck tandem with James Manson, and elevated his individual game significantly in the years that followed to earn All-Australian selection in 1994.
After more than a decade in black and white, Monkhorst was delisted by Collingwood following the 1999 season as the club looked to regenerate its list. He was thrown a lifeline by St Kilda in the pre-season draft, brought in to add experience and physical presence to a developing squad. He managed one final season at Moorabbin, playing 10 games before retiring, leaving the game as one of the era's most memorable enforcers and later transitioning into a highly regarded ruck coaching role at multiple AFL clubs.
